hi marc, bist du morgen (donnerstag noch da?) du kannst mich antwittern unter pickihh :) cu, Tina
hi marc, bist du schon da ??
Here is a new answer to your further question about Second Life!
http://icanhaz.com/formarc-2
(I called your question 'stupid' in the video! Will you forgive me? :) I should have used the word 'basic' I guess... Basic questions are still very important. Please keep them coming!)
Do I write too long comments, btw? ;-) I think crowdvine actually could be a little improved on comment threading and formatting ;-)
So I am not going to do a video as I already have problems to upload that one OpenSocial video from the Barcamp at all the hotspots I find here ;-) But regarding SL it does not really have to something to whether you are a noob or not. There are different possibilities why people don't "get it": a) they just don't know what to do after orientation island. This is very common as it's not a game and the next steps are not obvious. The hope here is for better orientation island better tailored for certain communities to guide them, b) you don't meet anybody "cool". This might be pure luck ;-) c) your hardware does not really is up to run SL. Also a common problem as 3D simply needs more computing power. d) you read the press which mostly wrote about SL without really experiencing it. There are probably more reasons. There is also the thing that for some people it simply is not the right thing. The same might happen with Facebook though ;-)
I maybe can show you something but actually right now I am not coming around in SL that much myself as I mostly meet with a certain group of people which are discussing the new SL architecture and virtual worlds interoperability issues. As I am quite busy these days I don't have that much time for doing more but I can try :-) It's also sometimes hard to showcase it as you really need to experience it yourself. E.g. if you meet people virtually it might first look strange but once you did it yourself you really identify with that situation (one might call it immersion). One client once asked me "And this puppet there is what you control?" and I was thinking "Huh?!? I _am_ that character". It sort of sucks you in. I also see Second Life not as something "second" as the name might imply but more as an extension of my first life and sort of more like another social network. And in fact I met a great deal of great people via SL (and met many them in RL). Additionally it has the creative aspect which is also very important to me. I can build houses there very easily and experiment with architecture and whatnot what I cannot really do in RL. Add to that the fun doing things which maybe nobody did before (which is there still easier than on the web). And with the new SL architecture we are basically completely on new ground and who knows, maybe this will be quite important someday.
As for the question about money you actually don't need to spend money. You might do so but you don't need to. Meeting people, attending events etc. is all mostly free. If you of course want to have some persistance presence there you might need land and thus need spend money but the same is usually true for web space (land is also hosting in the end). Someday with a more open virtual worlds landscape I guess though that some providers will also offer free land or whatever with different business models.
But let's meet this week. I will leave on thursday, will be at Ignite, at the workshops and various talks and at the Web2Open. I will also attend the conference party and Girl Geek Dinner. Looking forward to it :-)
Hi Marc, super. freu mich auf Austausch und Treffen....
Posted a video response for you on YT and Seesmic:
What is Second Life for?

Hello Marc,
we know that there is a large demand from mac users. We hope we can present a mac version on the begin of the next year.
Looking forward to meet you at the event.
Gosia
>i had a couple of questions for you regarding SL
>because i don't get it...
Marc, just shoot! We can still converse. Send me your questions on video, and I will answer on video. You can easily put questions and answers together for a video blog post! Right? It'd be fun... Let's do it! :)
>so who is the typical SL user,
>and what is he/she it using for (and i am talking
>about using, not just signing up for it)? is it just for
>entertainment like gaming, or is it more?
There are actually different segments. People are using it for amusement, but there are a lot of corporations using it for more then just marketing. They are using it for communication, collaborative work, design, training, etc.
Just as the shape of Web2.0 was not clear in 1994 or 95, and it took 10 years for blogs, and AJAX to emerge, and folksonomies gain widespread acceptance, etc., the same the 3D web and the metaverse is still very much in its infancy.
I am mostly happy asking questions, and enable my clients to ask the questions that are right to their industry, and community. The first step to understanding is to know if you know what the right questions are! :)
So, I am no waiting for your questions on video! Send the link to them to david@davidorban.com
Great, see ya in the afternoon (my cell is +1.514.993.9075)
Da bin ich dabei ! Lass uns mal am Dienstag auf der Expo treffen und dann machen wir mal nen Ort aus für den Abend. Ich bin am Montag schon da.
great convo going on here. i will be back after the barcamp party to read it all. (this is me hoping you two will carry on this conversation.)
I post on GV and YT. Also use Mogulus, and Veodia in Second Life (works great!)...
Humans absorb novelties at a constant rate. That is why the semantic web is actually more important than folksonomies.
A good video post can become relevant in two ways:
1) people vote it to the top (but my niches are apparently too nichy for this to work today, and I have YT shoeboxing me into one silly category out of ten)
2) machines properly index it, contextualize it, etc.
Since 1) doesn't much work for me, and 2) is not here yet, I prefer writing, and posting videos when I have something coherent to say, which might have some staying power...
But I am ready to change my mind!
Neither Google nor Wikipedia are sure what mata-mata's got to do with Web2.0. But since it is one of your main interests apparently, you'll tell me! Right?
Hi Marc,
I'll be there on Monday and Tuesday. Shall we phone? 0179 6731865
